Yesterday was the first official day of spring. Happy spring! This weekend is the perfect time to get your home ready for the warmer seasons. Whether you’re a new or long-term homeowner in Boston, or you’re trying to sell your Boston home, you want it to be in top-notch shape for the spring Boston real estate market! As your Boston real estate agent, I’d like to offer a few tips.
First off, you need to check your home for maintenance needs, due to winter damage. Luckily, this winter was mild in Boston, so you shouldn’t have too much to worry about! Still, it’s a good idea to check everything so that you don’t experience more damage down the road.
Look around the outside of your home. Notice if your decks or porches have areas of rotting wood or peeling paint, or if your siding or front door has chips in the paint. All of these could probably use a good hosing down and repainting if necessary. If you think your roof might have experienced damage in a storm, climb up a ladder and remove any piled up twigs, leaves and other debris.
Inside, once it gets warm and musty, odors tend to surface. MSN Real Estate recommends cleaning out your garbage disposal, cleaning out garbage cans with soap and water, and finding any cracks and leaks that attract moisture. Check appliances for plumbing leaks, like the toilets, sinks, washer and dryer, and also check the ground and walls for cracks or breakage in the tiling. The article talks in more detail about how to fix these problems if you find them.
After you work on the maintenance of your home, then comes the fun part! Make your home look more spring-y by adding cheerful décor that brightens your interior and pays tribute to the rebirth of nature!
This could mean:
Adding color! Paint your front door a bold color that is not included in your exterior, paint one accent wall a pastel or bright color in a room, or add colored accessories. These include sofa pillows, throw rugs, centerpieces, wall hangings or anything else you think up!
Adding nature! Fill a vase with real or artificial flowers of spring, such as lilac, tulips or lily of the valley. Plant some bright flowers right outside your front entry. Create a collage of twigs, leaves, pine cones and flower buds for your coffee table or as wall art. Accent with colors found in nature, such as soft greens, blues, browns and beiges.
Adding light! We get one extra hour of daylight every day now. Embrace it by replacing heavy window treatments with lighter ones. Open your blinds. Clean your windows. Allow as much natural light to stream in as possible. Also, on beautifully weathered days, open your windows! There isn’t anything you can do to make your house feel more welcoming than adding fresh air.
