Questions to Consider if Downsizing in a Boston Home!

The Boston Real Estate market is brimming with beautiful lofts, condos and townhomes that have many people moving to the downtown Boston lifestyle. It goes without saying that living in Boston has many perks as its vibrant atmosphere, along with a wide variety of restaurants, shops and things to do all within walking distance of each other offer an incredible and easily accessible lifestyle.

If you’ve been considering a move to Boston from any of the surrounding towns or even from out of state; the adjustment that will stand out the most will be the size of the home. Boston’s historic environment offers a charm and quality of home that is unmatched, but you’ll come to realize that homes built in early America were much smaller than today’s grand scale homes.

Below are a few things you’ll want to ask yourself and consider when contemplating a move to Boston’s downtown.

Does size matter to me?

- Many people feel that their home tells a lot about who they are and, in a sense, what they have accomplished. The need for a larger home may have to do with having enough room for those living with you, but it can also set a tone of status. Is a large home something that is really important to you, so much so that you’re not willing to give up the extra space? If moving into a smaller home for sake of being located in downtown Boston is okay with you; read on!

Will I save money?

- This is something that you’ll have to determine for your situation as there are many factors that play into this. Living in downtown Boston can be more expensive because you are paying for a great location. However, if your current home is a large home in one of Boston’s suburbs, or you plan on making a large profit with your home sale; you may very well be paying less overall for your Boston home.

Another aspect to consider in living in a smaller space is the money you will save on utilities. You’ll be using less energy to heat and cool your home; which is not only earth friendly, but a great way to save money.

Will I need to replace furniture?

- The good news is that smaller furniture tends to cost less. If you plan on selling some of your current furniture in an effort to downsize, you can end up making money on the deal. Focusing on quality, key pieces for your home will enhance the environment and afford you extra space in your Boston home.

How will my lifestyle change?

- To begin, many condos, lofts and townhomes have an HOA; which means you don’t have to make certain repairs in your home such as roofing, etc… Chances are, if you have a yard; the lawn maintenance will be included as well! If you’re looking to help the environment and you work downtown; selling your car may also be an option! Consider the exercise you’ll get, and the money you can save from being within walking distance to everything you need!

As you consider buying a home in Boston; these questions are things that you’ll want to consider. Of course, there are Boston homes that are still spacious but don’t be surprised at the overall downsize in the Boston Real Estate market. You’ll find that living in Boston is well worth any sacrifice you may have to make in regards to the space in your home!
